MINNIEVILLE ROAD WIDENING TO 4-LANES

Route 234 to Springs Road

In September 2016, Shirley Contracting Company, LLC was awarded the contract for the construction of Minnieville Road Widening to 4-Lanes project by the Prince William County Board of Supervisors. The project consisted of constructing the ultimate 4-lane divided Minnieville Road typical section from Route 234 to Spriggs Road, including turn lane improvements on Route 234.

The total length of the roadway improvements was approximately 2.1 miles and included the reconstruction of the road to provide a four-lane divided roadway with a raised 16’ median, a 5’ sidewalk on the south side of the road and a 10’ shared use path on the north side. The project included 600 lineal feet of 30” and 36” sanitary sewer relocation, 4,800 lineal feet of 12” watermain, two new cast-in-place retaining walls, and installation of three traffic signals.

The project also included the construction of a 64’ wide by 194’ long CON/SPAN® arch crossing of Powell’s Creek. The abutments and foundation included over 235,000 pounds of reinforced steel, 900 cubic yards of concrete, and utilized 12, 60” diameter drill shafts 17’ deep under one of the abutments. The other abutment at over 200’ in length included a 10’ tall, cantilevered cast-in-place retaining wall on a spread foundation.

After construction began, Prince William County added a Change Order which extended the eastern project limits past the Spriggs Road intersection and included replacing the entire signal infrastructure at the intersection.
