Completed in 1998, this
project dramatically altered the skyline and eastern
gateway into the town of Leesburg, Virginia. Taking
a congested, partial at-grade intersection, junction
of major highways and constructing a new flyover
interchange provided separation for local and
through traffic to improve travel. One of the
first major projects in the metric system this
$12 Million dollar project was completed in 330
calendar days. The major feature being a 470 meter
flyover bridge providing through passage for Route
7 west to the Route 15 South and Route 7 Bypass
around Leesburg. Two existing bridges carrying
Route 7 over Route 15 into business Leesburg were
widened in phases as well as the Route 15 Bypass
bridge over Tuscarora Creek and the W&OD Trail.
Relocation of gas, sanitary, water utility services
and the existing overhead power were coordinated
with the bridge and roadway construction. Additionally
the FAA regional Air Traffic Control Center was
adjacent to the project and had major communication
and critical utility services that required close
coordination to eliminate any disruption of service.
